His versatility and skill set the stage for a remarkable career in multiple racing disciplines.

Gurney competed in various forms of motorsport, including Formula One, IndyCar, NASCAR, and sports car racing. He achieved success in all of them, becoming one of the few drivers to win races in all four categories. Gurney’s Formula One career included victories for Ferrari, BRM, Porsche, and his own team, All American Racers (AAR). He also won the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1967, driving a Ford GT40 with A.J. Foyt.

Off the track, Gurney was known for his innovative spirit and contributions to motorsport technology. He introduced the full-face helmet to racing, which is now standard equipment for drivers. Gurney also pioneered the “Gurney flap,” an aerodynamic device used to improve downforce and stability on race cars. His influence on the sport extended far beyond his driving accomplishments.

After retiring as a driver, Gurney focused on his role as a team owner and engineer. His team, All American Racers, continued to compete successfully in various racing series.
