Carroll attended the University of the Pacific, where he played as a defensive back. Carroll’s coaching career began in the college ranks, where he served as an assistant coach at various universities, including Iowa State, Ohio State, and North Carolina State. He made the leap to the NFL in the 1980s, working as an assistant coach for teams like the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Jets. Carroll’s defensive expertise and leadership abilities quickly became evident, leading to his first head coaching position with the Jets in 1994.

After a brief stint with the New England Patriots, Carroll returned to college football in 2001, taking over as head coach of the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans.
