John Ursini, a prominent restaurateur and community leader, has been an integral part of the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa communities for decades. Born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1964, John moved to California in 1965, where he spent the majority of his life. He attended Sonora and Adams Elementary Schools, Tewinkle Middle School, and Estancia High School in Costa Mesa, where he excelled in varsity soccer, earning a spot on the All CIF 1st Team in his senior year.
John pursued higher education at UCLA, graduating in 1986 with a major in Communication and Psychology. His career began at Gallo Wine Company in the Hotel Restaurant Division, but in 1989, he transitioned to his family’s business, Newport Rib Company, which had opened its doors in 1984. Over the years, John has been actively managing, running, and promoting Newport Rib Company, contributing to its recognition as a staple in the local community. The restaurant has received numerous accolades, including the Mayor’s Award, Business of the Year Award, and Community Partner Award. Newport Rib Company will celebrate its 40th anniversary in October 2024.
John’s commitment to community service is evident through his extensive volunteer work. He served as President of the Newport Pier Association in the early 1990s and helped form Costa Mesa United, where he was involved as Vice President in the early 2000s. Since joining the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation (OCYSF) Board in 2010, John has held several key positions, including Banquet Chairman (2011-2018), President (2019-2022), Social and Recruiting Chairman (2022-present), and Veterans Committee Member (2019-present). Reflecting on his motivations, John says, “Helping to make sports available to those who could not do so on their own and enjoying a different social and business group who aligned with that same philosophy is why I joined the OCYSF Board.”
In addition to his work with OCYSF, John has coached many of his children’s sports teams and been involved in Indian Guides and Princesses, holding significant responsibilities during that time. His family includes his wife, Kathy Von Massenhausen, and their three adult children: Allie, and twins Angelo and Nicholas. John and his family reside in Newport Beach, where they are active in their community and enjoy various sports and outdoor activities.
John’s personal interests include playing golf, pickleball, and participating in local sports events. He is known for his adventurous spirit and his dedication to fostering a love for sports in the younger generation.
