John attended Gerstmeyer High School, where he excelled in baseball and basketball, and signed with the Cleveland Indians as an amateur free agent in 1961.

John made his MLB debut in 1963 and played for several teams throughout his 26-year career, including the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and California Angels. Known for his exceptional control and durability, John achieved numerous milestones, including 288 career wins and four All-Star selections. His longevity and consistent performance on the mound made him a standout pitcher in the league.

In 1974, John underwent a groundbreaking surgical procedure to repair a damaged ligament in his pitching arm. The surgery, now known as “Tommy John surgery,” was a success and allowed him to continue his career.
